Pdf Summary
The incidence of lung cancer in women is increasing in Bangladesh, despite a decrease in smoking prevalence among women in the country. This lack of information about patient characteristics makes it difficult to identify women at risk and provide adequate education and screening programs. A study was conducted to examine the socioeconomic status and characteristics of women diagnosed with lung cancer in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Data was collected from the National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital from January 2018 to December 2019. Out of 4423 women registered in the cancer database, 515 had lung cancer. Lung cancer was the fourth most prevalent cancer among women in Bangladesh, after breast, gastrointestinal tract, and gynecological cancers. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounted for 82.07% of cases, followed by small cell carcinoma and other histologies. The average age of the patients was 54.28 years, with 16.27% of patients being under 40 years old. A significant number of patients denied tobacco use, while others were cigarette smokers or used betel nut and chewed tobacco. The majority of patients belonged to a low socioeconomic status. The study concludes that factors such as using firewood, straw, or dung as heat sources for cooking and second-hand smoking may contribute to the high incidence of lung cancer among Bangladeshi women. Further evaluation of these factors is necessary. Understanding the risk factors will help prioritize prevention and early screening efforts.
