Pdf Summary
The American Cancer Society National Lung Cancer Roundtable's (NLCRT) Survivorship, Stigma, and Nihilism Task Group has developed a national initiative called the Campaign to End Lung Cancer Stigma. This initiative aims to address the common and detrimental stigma associated with lung cancer and its impact on individuals and their families. To guide their efforts, the NLCRT conducted a Lung Cancer Stigma Summit in 2020, bringing together key stakeholders from various organizations. During the summit, three core themes (urgency, empathy, and optimism) were established, along with four goals and corresponding projects.

The four goals of the Campaign include reframing lung cancer through media and messaging, improving survivorship by enhancing lung cancer control and care, enhancing understanding and empathy through multi-level educational efforts, and amplifying and expanding lung cancer research. These goals aim to challenge societal perspectives, support survivors, educate caregivers, and promote research.

The Campaign has also developed various interventions to address lung cancer stigma, such as a national media campaign, the development of lung cancer survivorship care guidelines, a health system stigma assessment kit, and training materials for healthcare professionals. The ongoing work of the Campaign focuses on refining and testing these interventions and securing support from NLCRT members and state-based organizations to disseminate them widely.

Despite significant advancements in lung cancer detection and treatment, individuals at high risk and those diagnosed with lung cancer still face challenges due to stigma. The Campaign to End Lung Cancer Stigma has the potential to eliminate the prevalence of stigma and its adverse effects. The ACS-NLCRT is committed to executing this framework through intervention development, implementation, and ongoing measurement and evaluation. Additionally, there is a desire to understand intersectional stigma, cross-cultural considerations, and support international collaboration.

The Campaign's next steps include sustaining momentum, continuing developmental work on primary projects, preparing for implementation, considering intersectional considerations, and developing international collaborations. The Campaign's ultimate goal is to improve lung cancer outcomes by ending stigma and promoting optimal care. Resources and acknowledgments are provided for further information about the Campaign and the NLCRT.
