Pdf Summary
The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many lung cancer support groups to transition to virtual platforms, cutting off vital support for patients when connection is needed more than ever. A survey of 85 group facilitators revealed that the majority (81%) were using Zoom, with other platforms like WebEX, GoToMeeting, and Microsoft Teams also being utilized. Of the 42 responses received, it was found that five groups had completely stopped meeting, while one was already conducting national group sessions via telephone.

Traditionally, lung cancer support groups in the UK were facilitated by registered nurses, which resulted in a complete shutdown of these groups at the start of the pandemic. On the other hand, in the US, groups were facilitated by various healthcare professionals, lung cancer survivors, and lay people. This diversity in facilitators allowed at least 36 groups to adapt early and continue meeting.

The challenges brought about by the pandemic have also presented opportunities for lung cancer support groups. Many groups in the US expanded their reach geographically, opening participation to an entire state or nationwide. This change has enabled more individuals within the lung cancer community to access support groups than ever before.

In order to ease the transition to virtual platforms, facilitators provided various forms of assistance for attendees, including virtual platform training, tip sheets, and designated troubleshooters. Other tips included maintaining a login time to decrease distractions, offering breakout groups for more intimate connection, and being patient with participants as they adjust to the changes.

Overall, while the pandemic has disrupted in-person support groups for lung cancer patients, the shift to virtual platforms has allowed for continued support and even broadened access to support groups. The variety of facilitators and the willingness of groups to adapt have been key factors in the ongoing success of these virtual support groups.
