Pdf Summary
Cancer is a major cause of death worldwide and Indonesia ranks 23rd in Asia and 8th in Southeast Asia in terms of cancer deaths. Lung cancer is particularly burdensome in Indonesia, with a high mortality rate. Interleukin-23 (IL-23) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that has been linked to the development and progression of tumor cells. The composition of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in exhaled breath has been associated with the development of various gases and may provide valuable information about lung cancer.

This study aimed to investigate the correlation between IL-23 and VOCs in lung cancer patients. The study recruited 40 lung cancer patients and 42 healthy subjects. Participants were asked to exhale their breath into a sample bag, which was immediately analyzed using a breath analyzer machine. Blood serum samples were also taken to test for IL-23 using the ELISA method.

The results showed significant differences in the concentration of several VOCs, including Ozone, Ethanol, Formaldehydes, Toluene, Acetone, Ammonia, Ammonium, Nitrogen Dioxide, and Methane, between lung cancer patients and healthy subjects. The concentration of IL-23 also differed significantly between the two groups. Spearman correlation analysis revealed a positive correlation between serum IL-23 and CH2O, C7H8, and NH3, and a negative correlation with NO2.

The findings suggest that VOCs from exhaled breath have a correlation with IL-23 levels in lung cancer patients. This indicates that analyzing VOCs may be a useful method for detecting and monitoring lung cancer. Further research is needed to fully understand the relationship between IL-23 and VOCs and their potential as diagnostic or prognostic markers for lung cancer.
