Pdf Summary
A study was conducted to determine the willingness of potential lung cancer screeners to participate in low-dose CT (LDCT) screening, as well as to determine the importance of certain factors in their decision to participate. The study included current and former smokers aged 50-75 without a history of lung cancer. The participants were asked to rank eight predefined decision criteria, including screening location, waiting time for results, immediate feedback from a nurse, frequency of screening, benefits of screening on a population level, number of missed cases, number of follow-up diagnostic tests, and which diseases are screened for.

The survey found that the average willingness to participate in LDCT screening for lung cancer was 71.1%. However, when the screening included simultaneous evaluation of emphysema and cardiovascular disease (CVD), the average willingness increased to 73.4%. There were no significant differences in willingness to participate between men and women or different age groups, but individuals with a lower level of education had the lowest willingness to participate. The study also found that there was a weak correlation between self-evaluated lung cancer risk and willingness to participate in screening.

The most important decision criteria for participants were high diagnostic sensitivity (i.e., few missed cases) and screening frequency (i.e., achieving health benefits with a low screening frequency). The study concluded that willingness to participate in screening was highest when it included screening for lung cancer, emphysema, and CVD simultaneously. There were small differences in willingness to participate between different subgroups. The study suggests that the results can be extrapolated to assess the long-term impact of screening.
