Pdf Summary
This systematic review focuses on the utilization and effectiveness of knowledge translation (KT) interventions in the context of lung cancer screening (LCS) using low dose CT scan (LDCT). While there is evidence that LCS improves outcomes, it is unclear whether this evidence is being effectively translated into practice.

The review used a PICO framework to identify eligible articles and conducted literature searches in various databases. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 24 studies were selected for data extraction. These studies were published between 2014 and 2021 and were conducted in the USA, Canada, UK, and Japan.

A variety of KT interventions were identified, including staff training, patient education (classes, print, web-based, and video), shared decision-making tools, reminders and triggers, and materials targeting specific populations. The studies addressed various endpoints, such as knowledge-based endpoints, intention to screen endpoints, and actual LDCT uptake endpoints.

Of the 11 studies that measured LDCT uptake, 4 demonstrated a positive effect on screening rates after the KT intervention, 3 showed no effect, and 4 had no comparator. However, most of the evidence presented in the studies was low level, and there was a lack of randomized controlled trials that measured actual screening rates as an outcome.

The review concludes that further high-quality studies are needed to optimize the implementation of LDCT LCS programs and improve uptake. It emphasizes the importance of integrating KT interventions into LCS implementation plans to bridge the gap between evidence and practice.

Overall, the review highlights the need for more research on the utilization and effectiveness of KT interventions in the context of LDCT LCS and emphasizes the importance of implementing evidence-based strategies to improve knowledge, intention to screen, and participation in LCS programs.
