EP01.02-004. Education Messages and Strategies About Lung Cancer Screening: A Systematic Review
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This systematic review focuses on education messages and strategies used to inform the public, individuals at high risk, and healthcare providers about lung cancer screening. The review highlights the importance of consistent and effective messaging to help people make informed decisions about screening. International examples are seen as valuable for developing locally appropriate messaging and strategies. The review emphasizes the effectiveness of low-dose computed tomography in reducing lung cancer mortality in international screening trials.

The review identified and evaluated 22 relevant studies, with the majority conducted in the United States since a recommendation for lung cancer screening was established in 2013. Key messages identified for individuals at risk and healthcare providers included information about screening recommendations, the benefits and harms of screening, the cost of screening and insurance coverage, and eligibility criteria. However, limited information was provided on how to access resources and few studies provided cues to action, such as encouraging participants to discuss screening with their doctors.

Overall, the review underscores the need for clear, consistent, and accessible education messaging for lung cancer screening. By synthesizing key messages and strategies from trials, pilot studies, and real-world programs, the review aims to inform the development of effective awareness campaigns. It emphasizes the importance of learning from international examples to tailor messaging to local contexts and highlights the potential of low-dose computed tomography for reducing lung cancer mortality. The review ultimately seeks to improve public knowledge and awareness about lung cancer screening, empowering individuals and healthcare providers to make informed decisions.
