Pdf Summary
This study aimed to explore and develop a tailored approach for recruiting individuals into lung cancer screening (LS). Participants were smokers, ex-smokers, and family members of smokers aged 50-75 years. Advertisements were used to invite participants to take part in semi-structured telephone interviews. Interviews were conducted to understand participants' views on health screening invitations, knowledge of and barriers to LS, and ways to encourage attendance at LS. The interviews were analyzed using the framework approach.

The findings from the interviews suggest that most participants had very little knowledge about LS and assumed it involved X-rays and potentially blood tests. Participants suggested that pre-invite promotion through TV adverts would reassure individuals and explain that screening is just a precaution. Participants also expressed positive attitudes towards attending LS, even though they may feel anxious, as they would prefer to know if something was wrong and receive treatment. They felt it unfair that smokers were prioritized for screening, as anyone could develop lung cancer, and believed LS should be accessible to all.

Participants recommended that invitations for LS should include brief information about the screening process, the benefits of screening, and the range of lung issues that can be detected. They suggested using testimonials and positive outcomes, emphasizing that LS is preventative, not just for treatment. A stern tone with scaremongering imagery should be avoided, as participants believed everyone is already aware of cancer. Participants also highlighted the importance of family members in encouraging attendance at LS and suggested that talking things through with a family member would help them see the benefits.

Overall, participants were open to being invited to LS and suggested that invitations should be open to all. Pre-invite promotion, positive messaging, and involving family members as a resource were identified as potential strategies to increase attendance at LS. This study provides insights for developing a tailored approach to recruitment for lung cancer screening.
