Pdf Summary
The study aimed to investigate the motivating factors and deterrents for low-dose screening (LDCT) follow-up among an underserved population in West Virginia, USA. Despite the proven benefits of LDCT in reducing lung cancer mortality, screening rates in the US are low, highlighting the need to understand patient motivations.

The study found that patient motivation to get a LDCT is predominantly physician-initiated, although the majority of patients had a personal connection to lung cancer. Patients who knew someone who had died from lung cancer were more likely to follow recommendations. Additionally, patients who agreed with fear and shame statements were also more likely to adhere to follow-up.

However, several barriers to LDCT follow-up were identified. These included misconceptions about lung cancer risks and symptoms, concerns about insurance coverage and radiation risks, and busy schedules. Furthermore, although many patients expressed the intention to quit smoking, half of them intended to continue smoking to some extent.

The study suggests that advocacy efforts may be more effective in encouraging LDCT follow-up by educating patients about the risks, symptoms, and mortality of lung cancer, particularly by highlighting personal connections. By addressing misconceptions, providing information on insurance coverage, and addressing concerns about radiation risks, barriers to LDCT follow-up may be reduced.

In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of understanding patient motivations and addressing barriers to LDCT follow-up. By improving patient education and awareness, advocating for risk reduction, and addressing concerns, the use of LDCT for lung cancer screening may become more widespread, ultimately leading to improved patient outcomes.
