Pdf Summary
A new patient education tool called Pocket Nodules has been developed to help individuals understand lung nodules and their risk of cancer. Initial data from 31 patients showed that 97% found the tool helpful in understanding nodules and reducing anxiety. QR codes are currently being used to gather additional survey data from thoracic surgeons and patients, further demonstrating the usefulness of Pocket Nodules. Surgeons view the tool as extremely important in providing information about nodules, while patients find it helpful in understanding the size and characteristics of a nodule. The tool is especially appreciated by patients who have learned something new and gained a better overall understanding of nodules. The tool is being produced for wider use in various medical settings, including primary care practices, pulmonology clinics, emergency departments, hospital inpatient units, and cancer programs. Its benefits include creating a paradigm shift in shared lung screening and decision-making, establishing meaningful connections with patients, engaging patients in experiential learning, improving patient understanding and recall, offering the opportunity for patients to share information with others and reduce anxiety, and enhancing understanding of metric measurements for patients unfamiliar with them.
