Pdf Summary
A qualitative study conducted in Australia aimed to identify potential drivers of lung cancer screening participation, in order to inform future implementation. The study interviewed individuals who either participated (screeners) or declined to participate (decliners) in lung cancer screening. The analysis used the COM-B model (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation-Behaviour) to explore screening behavior.

The study found that motivation to screen for lung cancer was high for both screeners and decliners. However, motivation alone was not enough to drive behavior. Strategies that focus on capability and opportunity may enhance screening participation. These strategies include supporting individuals' unique concerns through clinician education, lessening geographical barriers to screening by providing mobile scanners, reducing the financial impact with travel and accommodation assistance, and recognizing the importance of social support in decision making.

The study identified several drivers of screening behavior for both screeners and decliners. These include awareness of one's own risk, belief in the benefits of screening, the presence of stigma, access to a general practitioner, location as a barrier, support from family, practical barriers of everyday life, and knowledge and understanding of screening.

The recruitment for the study involved a total of 39 participants, with 25 screeners and 14 decliners. The participants were recruited from two sites and included both male and female individuals from various remoteness categories.

In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of addressing capability and opportunity factors to encourage participation in lung cancer screening. The findings can inform future implementation of screening programs in Australia and potentially improve screening rates among high-risk individuals.
