Pdf Summary
A pilot study was conducted in Georgia to evaluate the use of low-dose CT scans for lung cancer screening in high-risk individuals. The study was prompted by the high prevalence of smoking in the country, with almost one-third of the population being smokers. The research took place at Todua Clinic, where 241 patients were enrolled between June 1, 2021, and June 30, 2021. Patients were eligible for the study if they had a history of tobacco smoking (20 pack-years), former heavy smoking, or were aged 55 years or older.

The low-dose chest CT scans were performed using a state-of-the-art scanner and interpreted according to the LUNG RADS version 1.1 guidelines. The results showed that low-dose CT can effectively screen for lung cancer in asymptomatic high-risk individuals. The findings were categorized based on the LUNG RADS system, with Category 1 indicating a negative result, Category 2 indicating a benign finding, Category 3 indicating a finding that requires short interval follow-up, and Categories 4A, 4B, and 4X indicating findings with varying levels of suspicion for lung cancer.

Although this pilot study provided encouraging results, further research and a larger recruitment of the population are needed to determine the long-term effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of low-dose CT screening in Georgia. The ultimate goal is to reduce mortality rates associated with lung cancer in the country. The study also highlighted the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in decision-making regarding screening frequency and follow-up for individuals with abnormal findings. Overall, the preliminary data suggest that low-dose CT screening has potential as a useful tool in lung cancer early detection and prevention efforts in Georgia.
