Pdf Summary
A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a cloud-based quality control system (CQCS) using computer aided detection program (CAD) in the Korean national lung cancer screening program (KNLCS). The program, implemented in 2019, uses low-dose CT scans to screen the high-risk smoking population for lung cancer. In 2021, an artificial intelligence (AI)-based CAD was launched as an improved version of the CQCS.

The study compared the positive rates and inter-observer variability between radiologists using and not using the CQCS, as well as before and after the use of the CQCS. The main quality index evaluated was the proportion of nodules classified as Lung-RADS category 3 and 4.

The results showed that radiologists using the CQCS had higher positive rates and lower variability compared to those not using it. When comparing before and after using the CQCS, positive rates increased and variability decreased. After implementing the AI-based CAD, positive rates increased slightly and variability increased for a group of radiologists.

Overall, the CQCS was found to be effective in assisting in the detection of lung nodules and reducing variability in screening results among radiologists and screening units. Further studies are needed to develop a quality control strategy for the newly implemented AI-based CAD.

In conclusion, the study demonstrated the effectiveness of the CQCS in improving the accuracy and consistency of lung cancer screening in the Korean national program. The implementation of the AI-based CAD further enhanced the screening process.
