Pdf Summary
Lung cancer is a primary concern for patients who have survived breast cancer due to the increased risk of developing other primary tumors. A recent study examined the characteristics and outcomes of patients who underwent surgery for second primary lung cancer after having breast cancer.

The study included 91 patients who had previously been diagnosed with breast cancer and later underwent surgery for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) between 2011 and March 2021. The majority of patients were female (97.8%). All surgeries resulted in complete resections without any postoperative mortality.

Adenocarcinoma was the most common histology for the lung cancer cases (82.4%). The pathological staging of lung cancer showed that most cases were stage I, with a few cases being stage IIA, IIB, or IIIA. Analysis revealed that breast cancers that were positive for Progesterone Receptors (PR) and Estrogen Receptors (ER), as well as previous fertility, were associated with a delayed occurrence of NSCLC. On the other hand, previous radiation therapy (RT) for breast cancer was associated with an early onset of NSCLC.

During the average follow-up period of 38.1 months, no deaths due to breast cancer were observed. The 5-year cancer-specific survival (CSS) rate was 94.5%, and the 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) rate was 84.6%. CSS and DFS were significantly affected by the stage of lung cancer, with higher survival rates observed in patients with stage IIB NSCLC.

In conclusion, the stage of lung cancer is the main determinant of survival for patients who undergo surgery for NSCLC after breast cancer. Hormonal factors and previous radiation therapy can also influence the timing of NSCLC occurrence. The study suggests that implementing a lung cancer screening program for breast cancer survivors may improve survival outcomes.
