This study aimed to investigate the frequency of primary lung adenocarcinoma in growing nonsolid nodules and part-solid nodules with a small solid component of 5 mm. The researchers reviewed patients who had undergone transthoracic CT-guided biopsy and subsequent lung resection for the biopsied nodule. They focused on patients with nonsolid or part-solid nodules with a solid component up to 5 mm that showed growth based on size and/or attenuation compared to a prior scan.<br /><br />Among the 75 patients meeting the criteria, there were 20 nonsolid nodules and 55 part-solid nodules with a solid component of 5 mm. The median follow-up time was 20.5 months for nonsolid nodules and 12 months for part-solid nodules. <br /><br />Of the 20 patients with nonsolid nodules, 17 cases had a pathological diagnosis of primary pulmonary adenocarcinoma, while 3 cases were benign. The frequency of pulmonary adenocarcinoma in patients with growing nonsolid nodules was 85%.<br /><br />For the 55 patients with part-solid nodules with a solid component of 5 mm, all cases had a pathological diagnosis of cancer, with 54 cases being primary pulmonary adenocarcinoma and 1 case being extranodal marginal zone lymphoma.<br /><br />The study concluded that the frequency of pulmonary adenocarcinoma in patients with growing nonsolid nodules and part-solid nodules with a solid component of 5 mm is high. This finding is important when considering the next steps in management for these patients.
