A recent study conducted at the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System has found that the increased utilization of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) has led to a decrease in treatment disparities for early-stage lung cancer. The study aimed to determine whether the use of SBRT has increased the proportion of patients receiving definitive treatment for early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and whether this has reduced disparities between racial groups.<br /><br />The study analyzed data from the National Cancer Database (NCDB) and the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Result (SEER) database from 2004 to 2017. It found that the proportion of patients undergoing observation for early-stage NSCLC significantly decreased over time, while the proportion of patients receiving SBRT increased. This increase in SBRT utilization was seen in both white and black patients.<br /><br />Furthermore, the study found that as more patients received SBRT, the age-adjusted mortality rate of early-stage NSCLC decreased. This improvement in survival was particularly significant for patients with stage I lung cancer.<br /><br />The study's findings suggest that the increased use of SBRT has significantly increased the proportion of patients able to receive curative therapy for early-stage NSCLC. Additionally, it has reduced the treatment disparities previously seen between white and black patients. The study highlights the importance of incorporating SBRT into the management of early-stage NSCLC to improve patient outcomes and reduce disparities in lung cancer treatment.
