Pdf Summary
Salvage lung cancer surgery, which involves surgically removing local recurrent disease following definitive chemoradiotherapy (dCRT), is a potentially effective treatment option for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This study aimed to determine the efficacy of salvage lung resection after dCRT. The study conducted a retrospective review of a single-center database and identified patients who underwent salvage pulmonary resection for local recurrence or residual disease after receiving definitive radiation or chemoradiation for NSCLC. The characteristics of the patient cohort were compiled, and outcomes were compared.

The results showed that salvage pulmonary resection after dCRT can be performed with acceptable morbidity and mortality rates, making it a reasonable treatment option for recurrent or residual NSCLC following dCRT. The study found that the 90-day mortality rate was 0%, and the overall survival at the most recent follow-up was 73% (8 out of 11 patients), with a median follow-up time of 24 months.

The cohort included 11 patients who underwent salvage surgery between February 2017 and May 2021 at a hospital in Halifax, Canada. Four patients received chemotherapy in addition to definitive radiation, while the remaining seven were treated with radiation alone. The surgical characteristics of the patients who underwent salvage pulmonary resection were also described.

It is worth noting that none of the 11 patients received adjuvant chemotherapy after salvage surgery. This study adds to the existing evidence supporting salvage lung resection as a safe and effective oncologic option for patients with recurrent or residual NSCLC following dCRT.

For further inquiries, the contact information of the authors is provided: riley.bowker@dal.ca and Alison.Wallace@nshealth.ca.
