Pdf Summary
This study aimed to determine the surgical and pathological factors that influence the risk of recurrence after surgery for early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). A total of 212 patients who underwent curative surgery between January 2014 and August 2021 were analyzed. The patients' surgical procedures, age, gender, tumor stages, dimensions, histopathological diagnosis, and features were recorded.

The results showed that the majority of patients were male (73.1%), with a mean age of 62.82 years. Most patients were diagnosed with stage I NSCLC (96.2%), and adenocarcinoma was the most common histopathological diagnosis (78.3%). Recurrence occurred in 9.4% of cases, and mortality was observed in 17% of patients during follow-up. The mean survival time was significantly higher in patients without relapse compared to those with relapse (75.34 months vs. 30.97 months).

Further analysis revealed that the recurrence rate was higher in patients with squamous cell carcinoma compared to those with adenocarcinoma. Additionally, the presence of a histopathological feature called STAS (spread through air spaces) was found to be a significant risk factor for recurrence in both adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma patients.

Based on these findings, the study suggests that patients with a diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma and the presence of STAS should be closely monitored for a higher risk of recurrence. In cases with a high recurrence risk, additional surgery or systemic treatments may be considered. Overall, these results contribute to a better understanding of the factors affecting relapse in early-stage NSCLC and can guide treatment strategies in these patients.
