Pdf Summary
The prevalence of brain metastasis (BM) in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that have activating epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations was investigated in a multicenter study conducted in Portugal. The study found a high prevalence of BM in these patients, even in those without neurological symptoms, underscoring the need for brain imaging at diagnosis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was found to be the most effective method for evaluating brain metastasis.

The study enrolled a total of 72 patients with unresectable stage III or stage IV EGFR-mutated NSCLC. The majority of patients were female, non-smokers, and had at least two comorbidities. Adenocarcinoma was the most common histologic subtype, and most patients had stage IV disease. Genetic assessment showed that the most prevalent mutations were in Exon 19 (deletions) and Exon 21 (L858R).

The prevalence of BM in the overall population was 41.7%. Female patients had a higher rate of BM compared to male patients. Only 18.1% of patients reported neurological symptoms, but a significant proportion of patients without symptoms still had BM.

The study highlights the importance of early detection and monitoring of BM in NSCLC patients with EGFR mutations, as these patients have a higher risk of developing brain metastasis. The findings support the need for routine brain imaging at diagnosis in this patient population.

Overall, the study provides important insights into the prevalence and characteristics of BM in EGFR-mutated NSCLC patients in Portugal. Further research is needed to better understand the implications of BM on treatment decisions and disease management in these patients.
