Pdf Summary
The study aimed to characterize the profile of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who have a high familial aggregation of cancer. The researchers conducted a prospective study on NSCLC patients treated at Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, Spain, between October 2020 and January 2022. The patients underwent a personal interview to collect personal and family history of cancer, and their demographic data and exposure to carcinogens were recorded. Clinical and molecular data were collected from medical records. Some patients also underwent next-generation sequencing to analyze pathogenic germline variants.

The preliminary data from the study showed that 19% of the NSCLC patients had a high familial aggregation of cancer, particularly lung cancer. The majority of the patients had a personal history of a second cancer. The most common tumors identified in these patients were lung cancer, gastric cancer, and breast cancer. Additionally, a high rate of pathogenic germline variants was detected in the small number of patients who underwent genetic testing.

The study highlights the importance of considering family history and genetic factors in the management of lung cancer. The researchers suggest that specific criteria for genetic testing should be identified for patients with lung cancer, as this population is not routinely studied in genetic counseling units. The data collected from this study will contribute to a better understanding of the clinical and molecular profile of lung tumors associated with familial cancer aggregation.

Further research is needed to validate these preliminary findings and to develop personalized approaches for the management of lung cancer in patients with high familial aggregation of cancer.
