Pdf Summary
The BEWELL study is a clinical trial conducted at The Ohio State University to evaluate the impact of a black raspberry food product on the microbiome and immune functions in long-time smokers at high risk for lung cancer. The study aimed to determine if the consumption of black raspberries could decrease the expression of cytokines and increase the abundance of specific gut microbes.

Participants in the study showed high compliance and low toxicity to the black raspberry intervention, indicating the feasibility of this approach in a high-risk smoking population. The majority of the participants were overweight and not physically active, making them an ideal target group for lung cancer prevention interventions.

While there were no significant associations between black raspberries and cytokines, the intervention did lead to increased relative abundance of specific gut microbes such as Blautia obeum, Lachnospiracaea unclassified, and Eubacterium rectale. These microbes have been linked to improved response to immune checkpoint inhibitors.

The study suggests that the black raspberry dietary intervention may be a viable method for reducing lung cancer risk and promoting a better response to immune checkpoint inhibitors. However, further research with larger cohorts is needed to confirm these findings and explore the relationship between black raspberries, cytokines, and microbes in current and former smokers.

The study was supported by various grants and acknowledgements, and the authors express their gratitude to the study participants and clinical research center staff for their efforts and support. Inquiries about the study can be directed to the lead author.
