Pdf Summary
This study aimed to evaluate the frequency of next-generation sequencing (NGS) testing for patients with de novo metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) at two different hospital settings within the Northwestern Medicine system. The study found that reflex NGS testing at the time of advanced NSCLC diagnosis was associated with higher rates of NGS testing. The study included 191 patients with stage IV NSCLC, and the demographics showed that the majority of patients were white and the median age was 70.

The results indicated that the NGS testing rates were significantly higher at Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH) compared to Central DuPage Hospital (CDH) and Delnor Hospital. NMH had a 95% rate of NGS testing sent at the time of initial biopsy, while CDH and Delnor had an 84.5% rate. In addition, 94.2% of patients had assays done for more than EGFR, ALK, and ROS1, with NMH having a 100% rate and CDH and Delnor having an 88.9% rate.

The study also found that Northwestern had a higher percentage of patients with targetable mutations for first-line therapy compared to CDH and Delnor, although the difference was not statistically significant. Additionally, a higher percentage of patients at Northwestern received first-line targeted therapies compared to CDH and Delnor, although again the difference was not statistically significant.

Overall, the study highlights the benefit of reflex NGS testing and the higher rates of NGS testing and first-line targeted therapies at Northwestern compared to the affiliate hospitals. The findings suggest that reflexive NGS testing at the time of advanced NSCLC diagnosis may help improve the utilization of targeted therapies for patients with metastatic NSCLC.
