Pdf Summary
The University of Miami conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of a patient navigation dashboard program in addressing barriers to lung cancer care for diverse populations. Patients with lung cancer often face challenges in receiving prompt diagnosis and management of their care, which can contribute to cancer disparities. The objective of this study was to identify and address barriers to care at the time of diagnosis.

The study included 546 new consecutive patient referrals, with a median age of 66 and a range of 23-97. Of these patients, 18% reported at least one barrier to care. The patient navigation dashboard program identified several barriers, including communication/interpreter, physical needs (such as housing and nutrition), health insurance (specifically for biomarker testing), transportation, and technology barriers.

Women, Hispanics, and patients in Stage IV were more likely to report barriers to care. The top referrals from the program were social work, interpreter services, and nutrition support. Technology barriers, particularly among the elderly, emerged as an important barrier in 23% of patients.

The study highlights the importance of patient navigation in addressing barriers to lung cancer care for diverse populations. The authors suggest future directions for research, such as studying the impact of navigation on early diagnosis and treatment outcomes, and interventions to reduce technological barriers for patients with low computer literacy. Overall, the patient navigation dashboard program proved to be an effective tool in identifying and addressing barriers to lung cancer care.
