Pdf Summary
A study was conducted to examine sex and age-related treatment patterns in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. The study aimed to address the knowledge gap regarding the effect of sex on treatment disparities in elderly patients. The researchers conducted a retrospective population-based observational study using real-world data from patients who received their first treatment at the Vaasa Central Hospital between 2016 and 2020. Patient characteristics including gender, stage at diagnosis, histopathology, BMI, and smoking status were obtained from patient records.

The primary outcome of the study was guideline adherence, defined according to national and international guidelines. Undertreatment was defined as patients with a performance status of 0-2 not receiving treatment of adequate intensity for each NSCLC stage. The study included a total of 321 patients, with 209 (65.1%) being male and 112 (34.9%) being female.

The results showed that the amount of undertreatment increased with age, with older adults having higher rates of undertreatment compared to younger adults. Overall, there was no significant difference in undertreatment between sexes. However, younger men had a significantly higher risk of undertreatment compared to younger women.

These findings suggest that sex and age-related disparities may exist in the treatment patterns of NSCLC patients. The researchers highlight the need for further studies to investigate patient-related factors that influence treatment choices. More research is needed to understand the underlying reasons for these disparities and to develop interventions to ensure equal access to guideline-adherent treatment for all NSCLC patients.
