Pdf Summary
This study aimed to evaluate the association between frailty index (FI) and treatment outcomes in older adults with lung cancer. The researchers conducted a multidimensional geriatric assessment to determine the FI of 127 patients, with half of them being frail. The results showed that frailty was prevalent in more than 50% of the patients, including 34% of those with an Eastern Cooperative Group Performance Status (ECOG PS) of 0-1. Frail patients had an increased likelihood of not receiving or completing treatment compared to fit patients. They also experienced increased grade 3 treatment-related toxicity and unplanned admissions during treatment. Frailty (FI < 0.25) was associated with inferior survival, with an increased hazard ratio compared to fit patients. Increasing FI was also associated with adverse treatment outcomes.

The study findings suggest that older adults with lung cancer who are frail are more likely to experience negative treatment outcomes. These outcomes include not receiving or completing treatment, higher treatment-related toxicity, and increased unplanned admissions. Frailty was also associated with lower overall survival. The researchers concluded that increasing baseline frailty predicts an increased likelihood of adverse treatment-related outcomes and inferior survival.

The study highlights the importance of assessing frailty in older adults with lung cancer and considering it as a factor in treatment decisions. Further research is needed to explore interventions that may mitigate the negative association between frailty and treatment outcomes in this population. Overall, the findings of this study contribute to a better understanding of the impact of frailty on treatment outcomes in older adults with lung cancer.
