Pdf Summary
This study aimed to investigate the adherence to treatment recommendations from multidisciplinary tumor boards in the context of lung cancer care and its impact on patient outcomes. The data analyzed included 644 newly-diagnosed lung cancer patients discussed in a certified lung cancer center in Northern Germany between 2014 and 2018. The median age of the patients was 66 years, with 34% being female. Most patients had an ECOG status of 0 or 1 and were current or ex-heavy smokers.

The study found that 70% of the patients discussed in the tumor board were further treated at the same certified lung cancer center. In 85% of the patients, the treatment recommendations from the tumor boards were completely adhered to. However, there were cases of non-adherence due to reasons such as patient wishes, characteristics, and death before starting therapy.

The median overall survival for the patients was 15 months. Patients who completely adhered to the multidisciplinary tumor board recommendations had an overall survival of 17 months, compared to 5 months for patients with partial adherence and 4 months for patients with non-adherent treatment.

These preliminary findings suggest that patients who received adherent treatment after the first diagnosis had a longer overall survival. Further analysis will be conducted to examine patient characteristics and healthcare organizations as predictors of treatment adherence. The results can be used to design interventions to improve the adherence to tumor board recommendations and optimize the quality of care in outpatient oncology settings.

Overall, this study highlights the importance of multidisciplinary tumor boards in coordinating the care of lung cancer patients and following evidence-based treatment recommendations. Adherence to these recommendations appears to be associated with improved patient outcomes in terms of overall survival.
