Pdf Summary
A population-based study in Ontario, Canada, aimed to understand referral practices and access to specialist care for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) between 2010 and 2019. The study also sought to identify prognostic factors for medical oncology or radiation oncology consultation and NSCLC systemic therapy. The results showed that 61.3% of patients received medical oncology consultation and 50.9% received radiation oncology consultation following their diagnosis. The median time to a consultation was 24 days. The median overall survival varied depending on the stage of cancer, ranging from 50.9 months for stage I to 4.0 months for stage IV NSCLC. Prognostic factors for consultation included cancer stage and distance to the nearest cancer center. Factors influencing treatment included cancer stage, age, and specialist consultation. The study highlighted the impact of socioeconomic factors on a patient's access to specialized care and emphasized the importance of all patients with a lung cancer diagnosis having access to cancer care and a discussion of therapeutic options, regardless of cancer stage. The study, which used administrative data, provided valuable insights into access to specialist care for patients with NSCLC in the context of evolving therapeutic strategies. In light of the study's findings, the researchers emphasized the need for equitable access to specialist care, particularly considering the availability of newer and more effective therapeutic options for NSCLC.
