Pdf Summary
This study examines the emergency department (ED) utilization and unplanned care patterns among lung cancer (LC) patients. The researchers conducted a retrospective observational study of LC patients treated at the Medical Oncology Department of Puerta de Hierro University Hospital between 2016 and 2020. They evaluated the risk of ED visits, the risk of hospital admission, and compliance with recommended attention times according to the Manchester Triage System (MTS).

The results showed that ED visits were common among LC patients, with 82.9% of patients attending at least one visit, with 71% of these visits occurring in the first year after diagnosis. The extent of the disease was associated with an increased risk of ED visits and hospital admission, with locally advanced disease and metastatic disease having higher admission rates compared to local disease. Patients with ECOG 2 (a performance status measure) also had an increased risk of ED visits compared to those with ECOG 0. No associations were observed with age, sex, or histology.

The study also assessed compliance with recommended attention times for ED visits based on the MTS. The findings showed that 91.5% of ED visits were attended within the recommended time for each level of the MTS, indicating good compliance with unplanned acute care for LC patients.

The researchers concluded that ED visits are common among LC patients, particularly in the first year after diagnosis. Advanced disease and poorer performance status were associated with an increased risk of ED visits and hospital admission. The study highlights the importance of understanding the patterns of healthcare utilization among LC patients to ensure appropriate allocation of resources. Additionally, the high compliance with recommended attention times suggests that the quality of acute care for LC patients in the ED is generally maintained.
