This document is a summary of a systematic review and meta-analysis that explores the engagement and effectiveness of knowledge translation (KT) strategies used by cancer registries for healthcare improvement. The gap between research evidence and clinical implementation in cancer care is still significant, and cancer registries play a crucial role in providing data on care delivery performance.<br /><br />The review found 9 studies that examined the utilization and impacts of KT strategies employed by cancer registries. These studies focused on lung cancer, breast cancer, and multiple cancers, and were conducted in the UK, USA, Netherlands, and Australia. Four studies used national registries, while five used regional or state-based registries.<br /><br />The analysis revealed that there was routine use of monitoring and evaluation of data outcomes consistent with the registry's primary function in the included studies. However, there was minimal exploration of applying and translating these data for improvement. The reports also lacked substantive engagement in sustaining knowledge use, assessing barriers, adapting knowledge to the local context, and implementing interventions for improvement.<br /><br />The meta-analysis indicated inconsistent improvement in outcomes resulting from knowledge translation strategies. However, some impact on quality improvement was observed.<br /><br />Overall, the available studies provide limited evidence of the utilization and effectiveness of KT strategies in the context of cancer registry reporting for healthcare improvement. There is a great opportunity for further research on the utilization of KT and dissemination and implementation sciences to facilitate data-driven healthcare improvement in cancer using cancer registries.
