Pdf Summary
The study evaluated the implementation of an electronic patient reported outcome measures (ePROMs) system in the routine care of lung cancer patients. The researchers used a controlled before-and-after mixed-methods design and the RE-AIM framework to assess the Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance of the system. The data was collected through questionnaires, interviews with healthcare providers, electronic medical records, and field notes.

The results showed that 48 out of 79 eligible lung cancer patients completed 90 assessments during the implementation period. Each assessment resulted in at least one breach of a pre-defined threshold, with an average breach rate of 6%. Care coordinators responded to 95.6% of breaches and made 146 allied health referrals. The ePROM patients had significantly fewer visits to the cancer assessment unit for problematic symptoms compared to the control group. Referrals for allied health services were significantly higher in the ePROM group. However, there was no difference in emergency department presentations.

Overall, the study concluded that ePROMs were successfully implemented in the routine care of lung cancer patients. The early identification of patient concerns led to increased referrals for allied health services, and care coordinators played a crucial role in this care model. The results suggest that the ePROM system is acceptable, feasible, and can lead to significant benefits for both patients and healthcare systems.

The findings highlight the importance of incorporating patient reported outcomes in routine care and utilizing electronic systems to capture and address patient concerns. The study also emphasized the need for training and continued engagement of healthcare providers in the use of ePROMs. The research provides valuable insights for improving the care of lung cancer patients and potentially other patient populations.
