Pdf Summary
This study aimed to assess the impact of preventive care interventions on emergency room (ER) utilization in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer. The researchers implemented preventive care interventions during outpatient clinics, including educating patients and caregivers on managing treatment side effects at home and coordinating care during outpatient systemic therapy. They reviewed the medical records of 176 patients with advanced lung cancer who visited the ER between January 2011 and December 2021. The patients were divided into two groups: group A without preventive intervention and group B with preventive intervention.

The results showed that the most common presenting cancer-related symptoms were dyspnea, followed by pain, gastrointestinal symptoms, fever, and neurologic symptoms. The predominant cancer-unrelated issues were infections, fever, pain, and gastrointestinal issues.

The analysis revealed that the proportion of ER visits reduced significantly by 44% in group B with preventive intervention. The proportion of ER visits for cancer-related reasons was higher in group A without preventive intervention.

In conclusion, this study demonstrated that preventive care interventions can reduce unnecessary ER visits among lung cancer patients and decrease the proportion of cancer-related complaints. However, further studies are needed to validate these findings.
