Pdf Summary
The Scottish Inflammatory Prognostic Score (SIPS) has been found to predict survival outcomes in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with chemoradiotherapy. The score combines levels of albumin and neutrophil count to categorize patients into three tiers. This study aimed to examine the relationship between SIPS and overall tumor volume.

The researchers identified 295 patients who received chemoradiotherapy for stage III NSCLC between November 2012 and December 2020. They recorded pre-treatment levels of albumin and neutrophil count, as well as calculating the gross tumor volume (GTV) using radiotherapy planning software.

The results showed that SIPS stratified survival outcomes, with patients in the SIPS 0 tier having the longest median survival of 48.2 months, followed by SIPS 1 (26.6 months) and SIPS 2 (17.5 months). GTV also stratified survival, with patients in the first GTV tertile (6.8-55.1 cm3) having the longest median survival of 52.3 months, followed by the second tertile (55.4-128.0 cm3) with 33.1 months, and the third tertile (128.0-1601.5 cm3) with 21.0 months.

There was a significant difference in median GTV between patients with SIPS 0, 1, and 2. The proportion of SIPS 0, 1, and 2 patients in each GTV tertile varied. There was also a trend towards poorer survival in patients with higher levels of systemic inflammation, such as SIPS 2 patients in the second GTV tertile having lower survival compared to SIPS 0 and 1 patients.

In conclusion, both SIPS and GTV were found to prognosticate outcomes in patients with stage III NSCLC treated with chemoradiotherapy. There appears to be a relationship between inflammatory status and tumor volume, although further research is needed to fully understand this relationship and its clinical implications.
