Pdf Summary
The impact of COVID-19 on the diagnosis, treatment, and survival outcomes of lung cancer was studied at a Canadian academic center. The study included patients diagnosed with lung cancer between March 2019 and February 2022 at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal. Three cohorts were compared: pre-COVID period, first year of COVID, and second year of COVID.

The study findings revealed several significant changes due to the pandemic. In the first year of the pandemic, there was a significant drop in lung cancer diagnoses, followed by an increase in the second year. Limited access to surgeries led to a higher frequency of using radiosurgeries instead. The survival of metastatic lung cancer patients was shorter during the pandemic compared to the pre-COVID period.

Furthermore, there was an increased diagnosis rate of metastatic lung cancer, particularly with multiple extra-thoracic sites. The survival of patients with stage IV lung cancer decreased in the first year of the pandemic compared to the pre-COVID period. Similarly, those with stage IV lung cancer and multiple extra-thoracic sites had a decreased median survival in the first year of the pandemic.

The treatment patterns also showed some changes. There was a decrease in the use of surgery and an increase in the use of radiosurgery and systemic treatments during the pandemic compared to before. The study provides insight into how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected lung cancer diagnosis, treatment, and survival outcomes at an academic center in Canada.
