Pdf Summary
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to significant changes in the delivery of healthcare, including cancer care. In New Zealand, the highest level of restrictions was implemented, resulting in the reorganization of healthcare services. As a result, telehealth has emerged as an alternative approach to care delivery.

Telehealth offers several benefits for cancer patients. It can reduce patient-related costs such as travel, time off work, and childcare. Additionally, it can be less stressful for patients compared to in-person consultations. Clinicians have also found convenience and flexibility with telehealth.

However, there are challenges associated with using telehealth. These include technological concerns such as familiarity with the use of technology, access to the internet and data, and ensuring confidentiality. Despite these challenges, healthcare services are planning to incorporate virtual assessments and remote care delivery.

A study was conducted involving 30 lung cancer patients to explore their experience with telehealth during the COVID-19 lockdown. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and the data was thematically coded using NVivo software.

The results identified five key themes. Firstly, patients and their families found telehealth to be convenient. Secondly, patients expressed their preferences for consultation types. Thirdly, the importance of having pre-established relationships with healthcare professionals was highlighted. Fourthly, patients sought help and support during their cancer journey. Lastly, patients emphasized the importance of maintaining resilience.

The quotes from patients reflect their experiences with telehealth. One patient mentioned that it was easier to speak honestly when not looking at the healthcare professional in person. Another patient found telehealth to be more personal, although they were used to seeing their GP in person.

In conclusion, telehealth has provided a valuable alternative for delivering cancer care during the COVID-19 pandemic. It offers convenience and flexibility for patients, but challenges related to technology and confidentiality need to be addressed. Maintaining strong relationships between patients and healthcare professionals is also crucial. Overall, telehealth has the potential to enhance the experience of cancer patients and improve access to care.
