Pdf Summary
This study investigated the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on lung cancer resections. The researchers conducted a retrospective study over a three-year period (2019-2021) and divided the patients into two groups: Group A (lung cancer resection between March 2019 and February 2020) and Group B (lung cancer resection between March 2020 and May 2021). The outcome measures were the number of lung resections, the completed waiting period, and survival between the two groups.

The study found a 30.7% decrease in the volume of lung cancer resections during the Covid-19 pandemic. The completed waiting times for lung cancer resection also decreased by 26.51 days during the study period. Early survival was better in Group B patients than Group A, with higher pathological stages observed in Group A. Subgroup analysis showed that more stage-I lung cancers were operated on in Group B compared to Group A.

In terms of the causes of death, Group A had more cases of aspiration pneumonia, bowel ischemia, bowel obstruction, metastasis (lung and other), and other causes compared to Group B. Group B had a higher number of cases of metastasis (lung), pulmonary embolism, and postoperative respiratory failure. Stroke and infective endocarditis were reported as causes of death in Group A.

Overall, this study highlights the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on lung cancer resections. The decrease in the volume of resections and the changes in completed waiting times and survival indicate the challenges faced by patients and healthcare providers during this time. Further research is needed to understand the long-term effects of the pandemic on lung cancer care.
