Pdf Summary
This study analyzed the physiological and survival consequences of COVID-19 in lung cancer patients who had undergone pneumonectomy (surgical removal of a lung). The study included 70 patients out of a total of 111 who had undergone pneumonectomy at a clinic between 2001 and 2021. The patients' survival, daily physical activities, and the general condition of those who had COVID-19 were examined.

The majority of the patients were male (95.7%), and 57.14% had left pneumonectomy, while 42.85% had right pneumonectomy. Of the patients, 37.1% were alive, while 62.9% had died. Four patients had COVID-19, and two of them died.

The study found that the mortality rate was high in patients with COVID-19 following pneumonectomy, despite the low prevalence of COVID-19 in these patients. Some patients experienced worsened physical activity after pneumonectomy, while others had the same or improved physical activity compared to before the procedure.

The estimated survival of all patients was 106 months, and there was no significant difference in median survival between patients who had left pneumonectomy and those who had right pneumonectomy.

In conclusion, pneumonectomy appears to be safe and not debilitating for select lung cancer patients, even in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the mortality rate associated with COVID-19 was high in these patients. The study also found that a small fraction of patients experienced worsened physical activity after pneumonectomy.

Overall, this study provides insights into the survival and physiological consequences of COVID-19 in lung cancer patients who have undergone pneumonectomy.
