Pdf Summary
A single center experience from University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire in the United Kingdom highlights their efforts to maintain thoracic services during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the center aimed to continue providing full surgical services for lung cancer while adapting the surgical pathway to be less resource intense.

The study included a retrospective review of thoracic surgery patients from March 16, 2020, to May 1, 2020 (Group A), comparing them to patients operated on during the same period in 2019 (Group B). The results showed that there was no significant difference in pulmonary function, mortality, mechanical ventilation, length of inter-costal drain, or hospital stay between the two groups. However, there was less use of high dependency care and more patients in Group A were part of the Lung Cancer Pathway compared to Group B. Malignant histology was also confirmed in a higher percentage of patients in Group A.

Furthermore, the two-week post-operative outpatient follow-up in Group A did not identify any patients with symptoms consistent with or confirmed COVID-19. After a two-year follow-up, the survival rates were similar between the two groups.

The study highlights the successful efforts of the center in maintaining thoracic cancer services and minimizing the use of critical care resources without increasing complications. It also notes that during this period, tumors tended to be larger in size and histology was predominantly malignant.

Overall, the study showcases the center's ability to adapt and continue providing essential thoracic services during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings provide valuable insights for other healthcare providers facing similar circumstances and emphasize the importance of careful peri-operative planning.
