Pdf Summary
This study analyzed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on thoracic surgery in a single-center facility in Brazil. The researchers compared the cases from the Brazilian Public Healthcare System (SUS) and Private Healthcare (PH) between 2019 and 2021. Data from 217 procedures were collected, with 80 performed in 2019, 66 in 2020, and 71 in 2021. The analysis showed a decrease in the number of procedures on SUS during the pandemic, while the number remained stable on PH. Lobectomies also decreased during the pandemic, but the decrease was lower in 2021 compared to 2019. The incidence of lung resection for oncological reasons remained high, indicating the importance of these procedures. The average age of patients was higher on PH compared to SUS. Open thoracic surgery was more frequent on SUS due to limitations in equipment, while video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) was more common on PH. The overall incidence of thoracic surgery decreased during the pandemic but has started to return to baseline numbers. The study highlights the challenges faced by thoracic surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in the public healthcare system.
