Pdf Summary
A retrospective study conducted at the Mohamed VI Center for Cancer Treatment in Casablanca, Morocco, aimed to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the diagnostic stage of lung cancer. The study included 955 patients diagnosed with lung cancer between January 2019 and December 2020.

The findings of the study revealed that nearly 90% of the patients included were male, and 47% of the patients were diagnosed during the COVID-19 period. The majority of patients (66%) were diagnosed at stage IV of the disease. The study also found that the therapeutic delay was 15 days for 76% of patients, while the diagnostic delay was less than 30 days for 77% of patients. However, extension assessment was only performed in 56% of patients.

The limitations on visits to oncology centers during the pandemic led to an increase in the number of cases diagnosed at metastatic stages. This late diagnosis often resulted in patients being unable to receive specific cancer-related treatments, leading to a poor prognosis. The study highlights the significant negative impact of the COVID-19 crisis on the diagnosis of lung cancer.

The researchers stress the need to develop strategies to improve the quality of care in cancer services during pandemic outbreaks. They also note that measures taken at their center, such as virtual multidisciplinary consultation meetings, have helped minimize the impact on therapeutic delays and case discussions.

In conclusion, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a detrimental effect on the diagnostic stage of lung cancer, resulting in an increased proportion of patients with metastatic lung cancer who were unable to receive appropriate treatment. It is crucial to implement strategies to enhance cancer care during future pandemic outbreaks.
