Pdf Summary
A retrospective study conducted at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, India investigated the outcomes of lung resections in patients who had previously tested positive for COVID-19. The study included a total of 186 patients who underwent surgery between April 2020 and December 2021, with 26 (14.1%) of them testing positive for COVID-19 preoperatively.

The study found that lung resections can be safely performed in post-COVID patients. However, it also identified the potential for immune flare-ups, characterized by microabscess formation and placental transmogrification, which can lead to poor outcomes. Three patients in the study experienced a severe post-operative immune flare-up, similar to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), with one patient responding to steroids and the other two unfortunately passing away.

The outcomes of this study suggest that while lung resections can be conducted safely in patients who have recovered from COVID-19, there is a need for careful monitoring and consideration of potential immune flare-ups. This highlights the importance of identifying and managing postoperative complications in patients with a history of COVID-19.

Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the short-term outcomes of lung resections in post-COVID patients and emphasizes the importance of further research and understanding in this area. These findings may help inform clinical decision-making and improve patient outcomes in the future.
