Pdf Summary
This study examined the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on lung cancer surgery in Estonia. The researchers compared the number of lung cancer operations performed before and during the pandemic to evaluate its effect on cancer surgery. The study included all patients in Estonia who underwent a lung cancer operation with radical intent from 2018 to 2021.

The results showed that there was an increase in the number of surgically treated female lung cancer patients during the pandemic. However, other demographic characteristics of the study patients, such as cancer stage and distribution of morphological types, did not significantly differ between the two study periods.

Overall, there was an increase in the number of lung cancer operations during the pandemic, with a higher proportion of operations performed using the thoracoscopic approach (VATS) in the second study period. The study also found that the number of technically demanding operations, such as segmentectomies and bronchial sleeve resections, increased during the pandemic.

Based on these findings, the researchers concluded that the COVID-19 pandemic did not have a significant impact on the amount and evolution of surgical treatment for lung cancer in Estonia. Despite the pandemic, the number of lung cancer operations continued to increase, including a higher proportion of complex cases and operations performed using VATS.

Overall, this study suggests that lung cancer surgery in Estonia remained relatively unaffected by the COVID-19 pandemic, with healthcare facilities still able to carry out surgical treatment for lung cancer.
