Pdf Summary
This study investigated the occurrence of second primary cancers (SPCs) in a population-based mesothelioma registry in Lombardy, Italy. The mesothelioma registry included data on all incident cases of mesothelioma from 2000 to 2018. A total of 6,682 patients were included in the study, with a majority being male (65.8%) and with a median age at diagnosis of 72 years for males and 75 years for females.

The study found that 14.6% of mesothelioma patients developed SPCs, with 15.2% of males and 13.6% of females affected. The most common SPCs in males were prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, bladder cancer, cutaneous basalioma, renal cell cancer, and melanoma. In females, the most common SPCs were breast cancer, cutaneous basalioma, uterine cancer, colorectal cancer, melanoma, renal cell cancer, and bladder cancer.

The overall survival of the entire population was 10.9 months, with no significant difference by gender. The presence of SPCs did not have an impact on survival, as the median overall survival was similar for patients with SPCs (10.8 months) and those without SPCs (10.9 months).

The study suggests that SPCs are relatively common in mesothelioma patients but do not affect survival. The occurrence of asbestos-related SPCs was relatively low in this population, and the frequent occurrence of prostate and breast cancers may be attributed to their high global incidence rather than a genetic predisposition.
