Pdf Summary
This study aimed to investigate the factors that may impair the quality of life (QoL) in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). The researchers conducted a cohort study of MPM patients at a single center, obtaining baseline metrics at the first visit and repeated assessments every 3 months for up to 5 visits. Symptom and QoL measures were assessed using questionnaires, and lower extremity function was measured using a physical performance battery. The researchers used statistical analyses to examine the relationships between physical function, symptom burden, and QoL, as well as calculate hazard ratios for all-cause mortality. <br /><br />The study found that there was insufficient data on the factors impairing the QoL in MPM patients. It confirmed the high symptom burden of these patients, with more than half experiencing fatigue, dyspnea, insomnia, and pain. Lower extremity function, particularly the ability to perform chair stands, was significantly associated with symptom burden and QoL. The study suggests that lower extremity function may have prognostic significance for MPM patients and could be a modifiable factor that supportive care interventions can target to improve QoL. <br /><br />Overall, this study highlights the need to address the high symptom burden experienced by MPM patients and suggests that improving lower extremity function could be a valuable target for interventions aiming to enhance the QoL of these patients. The study was supported by a grant awarded by the University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center.
