Pdf Summary
A study conducted by Cedrés et al. sought to analyze the role of surgical procedures in the recurrence of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) and its impact on patient survival. The study reviewed 200 MPM patients diagnosed at Vall d'Hebron University Hospital between November 2002 and April 2021.

The results showed that the overall median survival for the patients was 21.3 months. Epithelioid histology, PS 0 (performance status) and treatment with cisplatin were associated with significant improvements in overall survival.

Surgical treatment was performed in 102 patients, with 79 patients undergoing talc pleurodesis, 19 patients undergoing pleural decortication, and 4 patients undergoing extrapleural pneumonectomy. Among these patients, 7 received a second surgery, either debulking or partial pleurectomy, or talc pleurodesis. The median time between the first and second surgery was 21 months.

The study found that patients who received any surgical procedure had a median overall survival of 23.2 months compared to 18.8 months for patients who did not undergo surgery. The median survival after the second surgical procedure was 15 months.

Based on these findings, the study concluded that second surgery can be an acceptable option for selected MPM patients. However, it emphasized the need for randomized trials to accurately measure the efficacy of surgery in MPM.

In summary, surgical procedures for recurrence in MPM patients were analyzed in this study. Second surgery was found to have a positive impact on survival, although the overall benefit of surgery in MPM remains unclear. Further research is needed to determine the true efficacy of surgery in this context.
