Pdf Summary
This study aimed to explore the familial history of cancer in patients diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM), a highly aggressive tumor associated with asbestos exposure. The researchers reviewed 200 MPM patients diagnosed at Vall dHebron University Hospital between November 2002 and April 2021. They found that 29% of the patients had a familial history of cancer, with 41 patients having a familial history of other cancers.

None of the patients had relatives with BAP1-1 related tumors, a tumor suppressor gene involved in the increased risk of mesothelioma. Only two patients with familial history were evaluated in a counseling genetic unit, and one of them was found to have a germline alteration in the BRCA2 gene.

The overall median survival of the patients was 21.3 months. Epithelioid histology, PS 0 (performance status), and treatment with cisplatin were associated with significant improvements in overall survival.

The study highlights the importance of assessing familial history in MPM patients. Further studies on larger series of MPM patients and family history of cancer could help in the early detection of the disease in family members.
