Pdf Summary
This study retrospectively reviewed unscheduled hospitalizations in patients with thoracic tumors (TT) in a medical oncology service. The study focused on patients who required hospital admission over a period of 6 months. The results showed that out of the 348 patients admitted, 90 had TT. The main causes of admission were tumor-related, followed by infection, immune-related adverse events (irAEs), and other conditions like venous thromboembolic disease and chemotherapy-related toxicity. The study also found that 56% of the patients died during admission or follow-up. Among the patients receiving immunotherapy, 23% required hospitalization due to irAEs, with pneumonitis being the most common irAE. The average number of cycles until the onset of irAE was 8. The study emphasizes that irAEs requiring hospitalization can be life-threatening. TT, particularly non-small-cell lung cancer, were the most common malignancies among the admitted patients. In conclusion, this study highlights the high hospitalization rates and mortality observed in patients with TT, especially those receiving immunotherapy. It underscores the importance of recognizing and managing irAEs associated with immunotherapy.
