Pdf Summary
This study examines the outcomes of patients with oligometastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who underwent surgical resection at a single center in Turkey. Oligometastatic lung cancer refers to cases where there are a limited number of metastases, and the aim of this study was to assess the results of surgical treatment in these patients.

A total of 27 patients with stage IVa NSCLC and cranial or adrenal metastases were included in the study. All patients had a single metastasis in a single organ, with 17 cranial and 10 adrenal metastases. The median age of the patients was 56 years. Surgical resection was performed on both the primary tumor and the metastases, with all patients undergoing craniotomy or adrenalectomy. There were no observed mortalities within 30 or 90 days after the surgery.

Regarding survival outcomes, the overall survival rates at 2 and 5 years were 76% and 47%, respectively. The median survival at 5 years was 60 months. However, recurrence within 24 months postoperatively was observed in 29% of the patients, with locoregional recurrences in the lung and mediastinal lymph nodes being the most common.

Based on the findings, the authors conclude that radical local treatment for cranial or adrenal metastases in patients without mediastinal lymph node metastases can lead to satisfactory overall survival results. These patients may be candidates for surgery on the primary lung tumor as well as complete adjuvant treatment.

However, the authors note that prospective randomized studies are needed to further validate these findings. They suggest that surgery should be considered as part of the multimodal treatment approach for oligometastatic lung cancer.

Overall, this study provides insights into the outcomes of patients with oligometastatic NSCLC who undergo surgical resection, highlighting the potential benefits of this treatment approach in improving survival rates.
