Pdf Summary
This study aimed to compare the quality of life for lung cancer patients who smoked before diagnosis and those who did not. Data from lung cancer patients in 8 countries who had provided information on their smoking history and side-effects was analyzed. The study found that past or current smokers reported higher incidence of side-effects compared to never smokers for almost every side-effect, including fatigue, breathlessness, appetite loss, sleeping problems, pain, cough, dry mouth, and constipation. The difference was statistically significant for fatigue, breathlessness, and appetite loss. Only the side-effect of rash/dry skin had an inverse correlation with smoking. Of the patients who reported being smokers before diagnosis, 84% had quit smoking after diagnosis. The study concluded that smoking cessation after a lung cancer diagnosis is beneficial for patients' outcomes and personalized support based on smoking history and habits may help improve patients' overall quality of life.
