Pdf Summary
A team of medical professionals and sports medicine specialists developed a program of adapted physical activity for lung cancer patients, with a specific focus on rowing. The program aimed to evaluate the feasibility and benefits of exercise for these patients. Although the program was initially postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was eventually conducted from March to July 2021.

The team consisted of oncologists, sports medicine specialists, two coaches specializing in adapted physical activity programs, and a cardiologist. The rowing society "Canottieri Peloro" provided logistical assistance, including equipment and a well-equipped gym.

The program included four patients with metastatic lung adenocarcinoma with EGFR mutations. These patients were receiving active oncological treatments and had well-controlled symptoms. They underwent a baseline evaluation, after which a personalized training program was developed for each patient. The training involved indoor sessions and individual rowing sessions.

All patients demonstrated full adherence to the training program and reported improvements in physical performance. There were no reported worsening of symptoms or issues related to cancer treatments. The experience of rowing had a positive impact on the patients, reducing their anxiety for the future.

This preliminary experience suggests that rowing could be a beneficial activity for lung cancer patients, particularly those with metastatic disease. The positive results from this program could pave the way for further exploration and research into the potential benefits of rowing for these patients. This could contribute to the development of specific programs to improve compliance and response to cancer treatments in metastatic lung cancer patients.

In conclusion, the program of adapted physical activity using rowing shows promise as a supportive and research-based approach for lung cancer patients. The study highlights the perspectives and challenges of implementing rowing as a form of exercise in this patient population. Further research is needed to better understand and define the specific benefits and limitations of rowing in metastatic lung cancer patients.
