Pdf Summary
This study aimed to investigate the nutritional status of cancer patients in a cancer hospital in Southwest China. The researchers enrolled 891 hospitalized patients with various types of malignant tumors and evaluated their nutritional risk using the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA), anthropometric measurements, and laboratory examination. The study found that 94.6% of the patients were malnourished, with 48.7% classified as severe malnutrition, 31.2% as moderate malnutrition, and 14.7% as mild malnutrition. Only 5.4% of the patients had no malnutrition. The rate of malnutrition was higher in gastrointestinal cancer patients compared to non-gastrointestinal cancer patients. Linear regression analysis showed that the PG-SGA scores were correlated with body mass index, serum total protein, hemoglobin serum, albumin, prealbumin, and calf circumference. Risk factors for severe malnutrition were age (65 years), low levels of albumin and prealbumin, and cancer-related pain. Interestingly, only 26.8% of moderately and severely malnourished patients received nutritional therapy. The findings suggest that routine nutritional assessment using PG-SGA should be conducted for cancer patients upon admission and appropriate nutritional therapy should be implemented. The study was supported by the Chongqing Science and Health Medical Scientific Research Project, Chongqing Talents Innovation Leading Talents Program, and Natural Science Foundation of Chongqing, China.
